Some people say, "I'm not into politics." We need to help those who say this understand that politics is into just about everything in our lives today, the welfare of our older loved ones as well as our children's lives. Some of the current topics under political consideration at the local or national level today are:

• The water you drink
• The economy you live in
• The air you breathe
• Whether your country is at war
• What the circumstances are for education for yourself and/or your loved ones
• Health care

These are just a few of the real issues facing us today. The news media many times seems to render them as abstract issues but they are not abstract issues. These issues currently or will shortly affect each of our lives in more ways than we can imagine.

So, it is so very important that we be engaged, be active in our input to our lawmakers. You may say, "But, I don't have the time." If the issue is important enough to you, you'll make the time. We all do this. We have to think for ourselves if we are going to push through a lot of the fog surrounding most issues. Many lobbyists don't want full disclosure about what they are pushing, but, if enough of the people (as in " that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth." from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address) demand open discussion and full disclosure, then we'll have better results.

No matter where you live, these are real issues. It is very important for each of us to engage and not fall into the sort of passivity of just being a news media consumer (8 second sound bite news). If we are going to change the direction of our country, we have to engage; we have to be active, we have to be involved. I don't mean this as a platitude; this is just the way our world works today. We are experiencing history in real time today. We let history pass us by when the US Supreme court took prayer out of school and made other changes based on false premises about what the First Amendment actually says (more on this in another topic coming soon).
